MR J. D. WILLIS, S.M., TO RETIRE

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 25. Mr J. D. Willis, the senior stipendiary magistrate in Dunedin, will retire on September 30, when he will go on extended retiring leave.

The retirement was announced in a brief statement today by the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan). Mr Willis, who has been on the Bench since 1946, is 64. The normal retiring age for magistrates is 68. Mr Willis was criticised recently by Mr Justice Henry, who held that Mr Willis’s approach to an intoxicated driving case was contrary to the Statute. A newspaper report ini

Dunedin on Wednesday said Mr Willis was understood to have asked that he be retired. Neither Mr Willis nor Mr Hanan would confirm or deny this at the time. Mr Willis was educated at Auckland Grammar School and graduated LI.M. in 1925 from Auckland University. He has published a number of legal text books. He was counsel for the Crown when the Royal Licensing Commisision sat in 1945.
