D.S.I.R. POST

Dr. A. T. Johns, of Palmerston North, has been appointed assistant directorgeneral, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, by the State Services Commission, the Press Association reports. He succeeds Mr L. W. Tiller, who is retiring. He will take up his new post next January. Since 1965, Dr. Johns has been director of the Plant Chemistry Division of the Department. From 1945 to 1948 he worked in the biochemistry department at Cambridge University and gained a Ph.D. in biochemistry. Returning to New Zealand in 1949, Dr. Johns joined the D.S.I.R. He is incoming president of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry. Dr. Johns last year became pro-chancellor of Massey University.—(P.A.)
