More Police For Cyprus
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, June 21. New Zealand’s third police contingent for peace-keeping duties in Cyprus is expected to leave in a little more than three weeks, a Police Department spokesman said today. Police headquarters, Wellington, issued a call for volunteers on Friday after the announcement that the Security Council had extended the mandate of the peace-keeping force for six months till December 26.
This morning several applications for service in Cyprus were already in hand. Applications close on June 29. New Zealand’s Cyprus contingent numbers 20 and it is likely some of those now serving will apply for an extension.
Volunteers will be selected on Wednesday and Thursday next week and brought to Trentham for special training, equipping and medical checks.
