KAITUNA VALLEY

i Plants Being Stolen Theft and destruction of shrubs at the Kaituna Valley Scenic Reserve are causing considerable concern to the Christchurch branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, according to its secretary (Mr W. J. Harris) “On one occasion,” he said yesterday, “several olearias were pulled up and left in a heap, presumably when the person responsible was ‘disturbed. This hedge had been planted to provide shelter around the parking area and had been fenced to prevent cars driving over the trees, as had happened previously. “Last week two flowering hebes. which were planted to beautify the driveway, were removed, and a visitor reported seeing persons carrying plants along one of the bush tracks.

“The removal of plants from any scenic reserve is prohibited, and there is a noticeboard stating this at the reserve entrance. A few years ago an offender was prosecuted, but the society hones that the need for a further prosecution will not arise. Much vc.luntary effort has gone into making this popular spot more attractive, and rnanv plants have bee- given. “The removal of the plants, and the dumping last week of a dead swan in the parking area, remind us of a notice in the National Parks of the States which reads. ‘Take only photographs, leave only footprints’." said Mr Harris.
