Soil Erosion

Sir, —“Factual” implied that overseas experts were in error when they deplored the state of our eroded high country. He is wrong, as consultation with the Forestry Service would prove. Our high country certainly is scarred with ever-increasing gashes and bare hill-tops, so that unless it is covered in snow its scenic beauty is ruined. Erosion definitely is on the mend, but only slowly, and improvement certainly has not reached the “snowballing” stage. Conservation is limited chiefly by insufficient finance and shortage of employees for the various tasks. More financial support would enable the employment of more conservators and make possible more extensive aerial topdressing and sowing. New Zealand is a wonderful country, and so we should not suffer her beauty to remain marred by erosion. By all means let us have more soil conservation.— Yours, etc., FURTHER FACTS. June 19, 1965.
