HUGE WAVE HITS
Vessel Badly Damaged (N.Z. Preus Association) WELLINGTON, June 20. The former coaster, Picton now owned by a syndicate and fishing off the Chatham Islands, returned to Wellington with half her port bulwarks damaged. She was hit by a huge wave about two days ago. The Picton. commanded by Captain A. Aberdeen, was returning to port loaded with several hundred cases of blue cod after being out for three weeks and a-half.
Captain Aberdeen said the swell was enormous.
“One minute we were up on top and the next down in 1 trough looking at the waves on each side of us,” he said. The huge wave pushed in the port bulwarks for half the ship's 88ft length. The timbers cracked and were pushed several feet towards her deckhouse. The bulwark railing also caved in. There was no apparent damage to the hull. A surveyor will inspect the vessel today. The Picton. formerly the Koau, was built in 1917. She is wooden.
