Unpopular Victory

(New Zealand Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH.

Fleeting Moment was given a hostile reception when he won the John Dewar and Sons Gold Cup on the second day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni on Saturday. He had been a beaten favourite on the first day.

Fleeting Moment was near the rear most of the way but he came with a well sustained run along the rails near the end and won going away from Le Plus which looked the winner at the furlong. Athlone, which made most of the pace, fought on well for third ahead of Kurrajong, Vigour and the favourite Blissful Lad which came to the end of a likely looking run inside the last furlong. Equality was at good odds in the Members’ Handicap which he won eastily from Wavering and General Derby. Firenze, fin ’.sihlng well, was next ahead of Toureg and David Jeff. Mireusonta won the Manawatu Steeplechase easily from The Bandit after these two had drawn out over the last snx furlongs. Mireusonta went to the front at the three and drew away for a decisive win. Racing was held in fine weather before a good attendance. The track was soft.
