Contest For Talk On Citizenship
With 14} out of 15 possible points, Mary Holmes, of St. Margaret’s College, Christchurch, won this year’s Wene Grace competition for pupils of New Zealand girls’ secondary schools.
She was half a point ahead of Wendy Woodward, Queen Margaret’s College, Wellington. Mary Oliver, Nelson Giris’ College, was third. The competition, sponsored by Miss Cora Wilding, of Kaikoura, took the form of a 10minute recorded talk on world citizenship. The winner will receive an individual prize and her school an annual trophy. Mr I. T. Tuarau, Maori carver of the Dominion Museum, has accepted a commission from Miss 'Wilding to carve a suitable trophy. The judges were Dr. Roger Duff, director of the Canterbury Museum, Miss Airini Grennell, a Christchurch radio personality, and Mrs Mary Woodward, a Christchurch housewife and chairman of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
Miss Wilding dedicates the competition to the memory of Wene Grace, a descendant of the Te Henheu family of the Ngati Tuwharetoa, Taupo,
and of the Rev. W. G. Grace. At the turn of the century, Wene Grace was head prefect of Nelson Giris’ College, termis champion and captain of the hockey team. After studying at the University of Canterbury, she taught at St. Hilda’s College, Dunedin, St. Margaret’s College, Christchurch, and, as Sister Eudora, at an Australian school, St. Michael’s, where she was headmistress. She died in 1944.
