Ten Compete In Silver Plough Qualifying Event

Winner of the qualifying event for the national ploughing championship, to be held at Ashburton on July 17, was E. J. Croy (Ashburton), one of 10 competitors in the match : which was sponsored by the I Timaru Ploughing Match Association in Mr A. C. Tomlinson’s paddock, Divans road. ■VVashdyke, on Saturday.
The elimination contest for the Atlantic silver plough was held in conjunction with matches conducted for the fortieth time by the local association. Finalists will compete in the world contest in Norway in October. Conditions were satisfactory, and although the ground was a bit on the dry side, the standard of ploughing was high. The secretary-treasurer (Mr C. G. Chittock) said that the average work in the qualifying event was good, and competitors performed creditably. Results were as follows: Qualifying event, Atlantic Silver Plough: E. J. Croy, 147 points. 1: C. E. Read (West Melton), 146 2-3, 2; J. C. Kyle (Timaru), 143 1-3, 3: R. M. Kingsbury (Ashburton), 143, 4. Class A, open, double furrow, cut as you please, tractor: C. Brown (Waimate) 1, E. Gibson (Taiko) 2, G. Christianson. (Waimate) 3.
Class B. open, double furrow, coulter cut, plain cast shares, grind as you please: J. G. Carter (Templeton) 1. J. D. Wvlle
(Claremont) 2, E. M. Duncan (Rakaia) 3.
Class C, open, three or more furrows: A. V. Inch (Methven) 1, A. F. Seyb (Claremont) 2. Class D, 19 and under, plain ploughing, coulters, and cast shares: E. A. Begg (Ashburton) 1 J. A. Holmes (Southbridge) 2, A. A. Marshall (Darfield) 3, G. C. Houstoun (Claremont) 4. Class E. open, tractors, three or more furrows: R. R. Ward (Christchurch) 1, W. G. Redmont (Rakaia) 2.
Class F, Young Farmers' Club, two or more furrows, plain ploughing: W. N. Begg (Ashburton) 1, G. W. McVey (Claremont) 2, D. Brown (Temuka) 3. Class G mounted ploughs: J. Scott (Rangiora) 1. Judges of the qualifying event were Messrs D. J. Stewart, J. S. T. McGiffert, and J. G. S. Wylie. Judges of other ploughing events were Messrs A. McKenzie, J. Nimmo, W. J. Hastings, and J. Brohan. Dog Trials Results of the dog trials were: Open, short pull: H. M. King’s Queen 1. W. Moynihan’s Cribb 2, R. M. McLeod’s Craig 3, R. D. McKenzie’s Cloud 4. Novice, open, maiden man and maiden dog, short pull and yard: W. Moynihan’s Cribb 1, R. D. McKenzie’s Cloud 2, V. Harris’s Gyp 3, A. McKerchar’s Rock 4.
The dog trials were judged by Mr E. E. Hooke. Special Prize Awards Special Prize Awards Special prizes were awarded as follows:
Ploughing: South Canterbury Woolbrokers’ and Stock Auctioneers’ Association champion challenge cup for best ploughing on ground, C. Brown; Davey Challege Cup (Classes B and C, best coulter cut ploughing, J. G. Carter; Turnbull Memorial Challenge Cup, district ploughman, Classes D., E., and F, W. McVey; Hill Memorial Challenge Cup, besfc district ploughman. Classes B and C, J. D. Wyllie; I. Gibson Farewell Cup, best disrict competitor, J. D. Wylie; jest break, T. D. Wyllie; best inish, R. M. Kingsbury; straighte>st ploughing, C. Brown; youngest ploughman, J. A. Holmes. Dog Trials: W. Mack (“Fan” Memorial) Challenge Cup, for best head and pull, H. M. King’s Queen: Blackwood Chalenge Cup, for open classes, H. M. King’s, Queen; R. Davie Challenge Cup, for best district competitor, W. Moynihan’s Cribb. Special prizes for Y.F.C. members were awarded to V. Harris in both classes. Trophies were presented by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr C. E. Thomson).
