SMUGGLED EXPLOSIVE
Conditional Sentence (N.Z.R. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK June 20. Michelle Duclos, a 26-year-old Canadian, was given a five-year conditional sentence yesterday for smuggling explosives into the United States as part of a scheme to blow up the Statue of Liberty and other national monuments. The sentence, Imposed by Judge William Herlands, means that the Director of Prisons in Washington will report on Miss Duclos within three months, after which the judge may decide whether to confirm the five-year sentence, reduce it, or place her on probation.
Miss Duclos pleaded guilty to the charge just before she was to have gone on trial with three men for conspiring to blow up the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument, and the Liberty Bell, in Philadelphia. The three men, all Negroes, were found guilty and given a. similar conditional sentence, but for 10 years each.
