CONTROL OF NASSELLA
The council had not been told what steps had been taken to eradicate or control the ‘ nassella tussock infestation at Cashmere, and should know for its own peace of mind, said Cr P. Wynn-Wil-liams, at a meeting of the Halswell County Council. “The position on Cashmere does not appear to be too bad, but in view of the thousands of pounds of public money spent on nassella control in North Canterbury, we should be satisfied that all possible is being done here,” he said. Cr. H. R. Williams said that the council’s noxious weeds inspector (Mr E. Hoskin) .mentioned in his report three or four nassella patches in Paparua county. The only reference to nassella in Halswell was to its growth along a fence line on Worsleys road. It was decided to ask Mr Hoskin to attend the next council meeting.
Car Fire.—Fire, caused by a cleaning rag igniting on a hot engine, did no damage to a pre-war car owned by Mr H. Sail, of Celia street, at 6.02 p.m. yesterday. Sumner firemen were called to the car at the side of the road in Clarke street.
