THAILAND AIRFIELD

Thailand’s Prime Minister. Field Marshal Thanok Kittikachom last week opened an airfield built at Leon Nok Tha by Australian. British and New Zealand forces. Others present at the opening ceremony included Air Chief Marshal Sir John Grandy, British commander-in-chief Far East, the British. Australian and New Zealand Ambassadors. Thai military chiefs and an official from S.E.A.T.O. The airfield, which has a 5000 ft runway and can be used by civilian as well as military aircraft, took 14 months to build by troops working in temperatures up to 120 degrees.
A medical centre built by the forces also has been presented to the Government as a district health centre. The airfield is a little more than 30 miles from the river Mekong which forms the boundary between Thailand and Laos. Its purpose is to improve military logistic facilities in Thailand.
