Table Tennis At Timaru

In a tournament marked with upsets, Canterbury’s V. N. Brightwell and Mrs M. J. Shadbolt emerged the victors in the men’s and women’s singles events of the South Canterbury open table tennis championships held at Timaru on Saturday. In the final of the men’s singles, when V. N. Brightwell led M. J. Coppen two games to love and the score was 6-1 in favour of Brightwell in the third game, Coppen withdrew and gave Brightwell the match by default.

Men’s Singles Quarter-finals.—R. J. Scott (C.) beat Chin Sin Pin (C.), 21-14, 21:17, 21-18; M. J. Coppen (C.) beat D. Butler (S.C.), 21-8, 21-14, 18-21, 21-18; D. J. Kalin (C.) beat T. K.
