Old Boys Gain First Win In Three Weeks

H. 5.0.8. 19: P. O’Malley. P. Hatchwell, A. Steel (2) tries; M. Miller a penalty and two conversions.

UNIVERSITY B 17: N. O'Brien ■ try: p. Gaffikin four penalties and a conversion. A depleted High School Old Boys team scored its first victory for three weeks in an unconvincing exhibition of Rugby against the lowly rated University B fifteen at Ham.

The score of 19 points to 17 was a little flattering to University B as Old Boys never really appeared in danger of defeat.

Neither side settled down to play constructive Rugby. Infringements were frequent and many dropped and misdirected passes broke down promising movements.

The energetic University B forwards gave an encouraging display, bustling Old Boys into many errors and consequently its fleet-footed back line rarely functioned smoothly. Both sets of backs tended to run across field leaving little room for their wingers to move in. A. Steel continually looked for work on the Old Boys left wing and was rewarded with two fine tries. R. Grenfell, substituting at fullback, played soundly.

C. Morris was a solid link at first five eighths for University B and the wings, B. Crisp and N. O'Brien, showed pace. The latter scored an excellent try through fast backing up.

M. McPherson covered intelligently for University and he harrassed the High School Old Boys inside backs, P. Gaffikin won a good share of the ball from the line-outs and place kicked accurately.

M. Miller and’D. Hill played well in the tight for Old Boys and D. Dailey did much useful work in the loose.

Referee: Mr M. J. M. Wood.
