TRIAL IN SOFIA
Nine Sent To Gaol
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SOFIA (Bulgaria), June 20. A military tribunal in Sofia yesterday sentenced nine men, including three generals to prison for plotting against the State.
The official Bulgarian News Agency described the defendants as “adventurists and careerists.”
Reports reaching the West soon after the arrests were reported in early April said the defendants had been plotting a coup against the proMoscow regime of Premier Todor Zhivkov. Among the defendants were General Tsvetko Anev, aged 50, former commmandant of the Sofia Military District. He was sentenced to 12 years gaol. The defendants received sentences totalling 81 years, and the sentences ranged from 15 to three years.
At least one additional defendant was placed on probation after the week-long closed trial. He was described as a Jugoslav immigrant to Bulgaria, identified only as Milanovich.
