Administration Of Education

Sir, —Mr S. W. Gower deserves the support of all interested parties in his reported protest at the short periods of time that some rapidly-pro-moted senior officials spend in their various positions. To many of us who have to spend ten or twenty years on the same step of the education ladder, the spectacle of our superiors leaping up from ledge to ledge, like goats up a mountain, gives us little faith in the validity of some of their judgments. Class and head teachers are usually required to stay in a position for two full years, and the same rule should apply to administrators, whatever their rank. At the same meeting, Mr Cartwright is reported as stating that he was optimistic. I give thanks that some board members, far from proclaiming optimism, are directing critical eyes at the system under their control, and are pressing forcefully for reforms and improvements.—Yours, J. F. WILLIAMS. June 20, 1965.

The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) will visit Christchurch on Wednesday. He will open the new wing and unveil a plaque at St. Helens Hospital before returning to Wellington in the evening.
