Christchurch Rates

Sir,—Mr H. J. Walker’s suggestion to spread the rates, paid to the City of Christchurch, by taking more from ratepayers in other suburbs, would have mpt with a more sympathetic ear had Mr Walker proposed a citizens’ tax in lieu of rates. Mr Walker would then be assured of an equal and adequate distribution of rates between all counties and suburbs from all wage earners. If Mr Walker really wants to make a name for himself why doesn’t he make a move to introduce a citizens’ tax now? Why suggest legislation to give local bodies more power to meddle with the collection of rates? —Yours, etc., June 19, 1965. W. TIER.
