Psychiatric Clinics

Sir, —1 write in support of Varian J. Wilson’s excellent letter of May 24 on the above subject. Psychiatric clinics, as at Christchurch, Princess Margaret and Calvary Hospitals, are real savers to the spiritual and material wealth of New Zealand and the sooner we stop “exporting” first class psychologists the better. What is mental illness anyway? Can’t the strongest as well as the weakest become mentally ill facing the impossible’ situation, accident injury, operation and unpredictable life generally? 1 have seen birds and animals mentally ill and coping perfectly. What do the doctors think?—Yours, etc., OBSERVER. June 18, 1965.
