Check Both Ends
Somewhere in Washington, it is reported, a shame-faced policeman is musing that when issuing tickets to overparked cars it pays to check the number plates with extra care. For the car to which he recently issued a ticket to belonged to a yeoman attached to the United States Naval Support Force, Antarctica. At ithe rear of the car was the i red-and-yellow number plate of Florida, at the front a white-and-blue SP-90 (South Pole, 90 degrees South latitude) Antarctica plate, heralding “The World’s Last Frontier.” So that was the number that went on the ticket—‘Antarctica SP-90.” The policeman failed to check the other end of the car. The Antarctica plates are made in Christchurch, and are sold as a novelty item at United States Navy exchanges to servicemen with the support force. The State of Florida issues only one number plate. Fine Week-end The week-end weather in Christchurch was fine and sunny. The maximum temperature recorded at Harewood on Saturday was 62 degrees at 2 p.m. There was a sixdegree frost at the airport yesterday and four degrees of frost were registered at the Botanic Gardens. The temperature at Harewood was 34 degrees at 9 a.m. and at noon it was 51 degrees. A maximum temperature of 56 degrees was recorded at the airport at 2 p.m. At 4.15 p.m. the temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 58 degrees.
