Halswell Sewerage Scheme Enlarged
Enlargement of the area to be covered by the Halswell County Council’s sewerage scheme is provided for in a plan from the consultant engineers (Messrs Royds and Sutherland), which was approved by the council at its meeting yesterday. The consultants explained that changed thinking on future residential development of the county made it desirable to extend the scheme to the north-west corner of the county. Allowance would be made for extra pumping capacity.
They said tenders for laying | the sewers and rising mains would close on July 5. Sewage from the Kennedy’s Bush area would go direct to the treatment plant, but more investigation was needed here. They had extended the completion date to 18 months. As sewers would cross private property, the council should give notice to those affected, calling for objections. The chairman (Mr J. V. Pethig) said land for the treatment plant and its access was being valued. The county engineer, Mr M. J. Clark) said it would be desirable to have a meeting of the landowners. The man whose land was wanted for the treatment plant, and others, were not happy. “I explained to him and others that there would be no oxidisation ponds, or anything objectionable.” said Mr Pethig. The council decided to confer with its consulting engineers and solicitor before meeting landowners. Remedied.—The consulting engineers advised that failures in the water supply pump switchgear had been traced to Post Office circuit faults. The defects had been remedied.
Supported.—The council decided that it had no objection to a Regional Planning Authority proposal to give Waimairi County two representative instead of one. Mr Pethig said Waimairi, by virtue of its growth, was justified in having more representation. There had always been the feeling that the city and Riccarton could out-vote the counties.
Health Inspection.— Paparua County wrote offering to do the county health inspection work, but the clerk (Mrs R. Ballintine) said she had told Paparua that Halswell had made satisfactory arrangements with Heathcote.
Bridge Proposal.— The council agreed with a works committee recommendation that the City Council and Heath cote County Council be approached regarding a new boundary bridge at Worsleys road.
Improved.—Trees on St. Mary’s Church corner on the Christchurch-Akaroa highway had been cleared, and visibility was improved, except that the church lych-gate now partially blocked the view, said Mr Pethig. Water Supply.—Cr. P. Wynn-Williams said he would discuss alternative proposals with Mr G. H. Gould for a water supply to serve seven Cashmere road properties.
Final Notice.—Owners of unregistered dogs will be given 14 days' final notice, and in default, their names will be given to the county solicitor.
