“The Press” In 1865
June 17 KAIAPOI MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.— The meeting was convened for the purpose of enquiring into the navigation of the river, and the trade of Kaiapoi in general. The following returns were laid before the meeting, consisting of wool, grain, coal, timber, hides, tallow, flour and general merchandise on the whole, showing the gross amount of the imports and exports to amount to the sum of £110,625, arrived at in the following manner, which shows the imports and exports for twelve months, up the river principally. Outwards Inwards Messrs. Rickman Bros. £8.652 £3,000 Messrs. White and Co. 4.000 30,000 Messrs. Beswick and Birch 50,000 11,000
Mr. A. Weston .... 4,000 Total £62,625 £48,000 Grand total £110,625 The opinion of those present seemed to be, that on the completion of the bridge over the Ashley, a large quantity of the goods now shipped to the Saltwater Creek would come via Kaiapoi, and some trifling improvements at the bar of the river, and the proper staking of the channel, with some better accommodation in the Customs department, would tend materially to increase the trade. It should be remarked that the above return does not include merchandise which is brought to Kaiapoi by vessels, and then removed to Woodend. Rangiora, Oxford, and many of the stations still further north.
