Minister's Appeal

In an Eye Safety Week message, the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) said that any kind of injury to the

eyes was a serious form of accident.

Each year, he said, more than 800 persons were admitted to hospital in New Zealand with severe eye injuries. About 3000 workers a year got compensation for the loss of more than a dav’s work.

About 40 persons a year in New Zealand, said Mr McKay, had to have an eye removed.

“I appeal to everyone to do everything possible to safeguard eyes and sight against injury.” said Mr McKay.

The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) and Mr McKay have written to all factory managers in New Zealand asking them to introduce eye-safety programmes in industry.
