DOUBLE AT NELSON Out-Of-Form Runners Succeed
(From Our Otrn Reporter.
NELSON.
Two out-of-form runners, Noisette and Presto, formed the winning T.A.B. double combination on the first day of the Nelson Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday.
Noisette received the run of the race in the Winter Handicap and drew 7 away 7 for a decisive win over Filet Mignon and Rolex, with the dominating favourite, Don Caesar, struggling into fourth place.
Presto came out on top by the narrowest of margins after a hard slog with Bar None all the way up the two-furlong uphill straight. The successful combination paid £l2l 12s 6d for £l.
Noisette, which is trained by W. A. McDonald for Messrs N. H. Macdonald and M. Raso, was driven by M. Holmes. After being one of the early leaders she was steadied in behind Thrift when that runner took the lead at the nine furlongs. She was sent clear early in the run home and soon put the issue beyond doubt to win by almost four lengths from Filet Mignon, which came home well after working clear of an awkward position early in the run home.
Rolex made a game bid wide out on the track to finish third two lengths further back with Don Caesar, which had followed Noisette all the way, stopping badly in fourth
position a length and a-half back, well dear of Waltz Away and Main Reason. Beresford Lady and Flying Melody were pulled up.
Don Caesar dominated betting on the race. He carried £1268 in a win pool of £2668 and £950 10s in a place pool of £3479 10s. He was the only runner seriously considered by doubles betters who invested £8929 5s on his chances in a pool of £19,169. Filet Mignon, the second favourite on the double, carried £2173 15s, while Rolex, the third favourite, carried £IBOB. Noisette was fourth favourite on the double with £1159 ss. Rolex was second favourite
for a win and a place. He carried £235 10s for a win and £425 for a place.
Presto was the win-and-place favourite for the second leg, the Stoke Handicap, but was fourth favourite, with 521 5s tickets, with doubles betters.
Hal Special, the off-course substitute, was favourite with 653 tickets, followed by Meadowmac with 611 and Emily with 585. Bar None, one of the outsiders of the field, was one of the leaders early in the Stoke Handicap. He followed Sky and Presto and the tiring Arneb towards the straight, ranged up to Presto and took a short lead outside the furlong and in a battling finish went under by half a head. Emily went a useful race for third after a slow start, but she was 10 lengths back, two lengths in front of Teena, with the same distance to Hal Special, which had every chance. Sky tired to sixth ahead of Meadowmac, which never looked a danger.
