PRETTYPEEN'S POPULAR ELLERSLIE WIN

“The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND.

r'rettypeen, the smallest of the eight runners and, with 10-1, top-weight, scored a wellmerited and popular victory in the McGregor Grant Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Prettypeen looked the winner during the last mile and a-half. Only Ringlock offered much opposition and at the finish was 15 lengths behind. A six-year-old mare, Prettypeen, had run the race of her life a week before when a close second behind Smoke Ring in the Great Northern Hurdles. Since beginning a winter campaign in mid-March she has had 11 starts for five firsts, two seconds and a third. Her record for consistency has made Prettypeen a great favourite. It is a tribute as well to the excellent management of her owner-trainer, Mr G. Campbell, of Matamata. Mr Campbell won Saturday’s race in 1947 with Surpeen when it was named the Winter Steeplechase. Valpeen is another which carried Mr Campbell’s colours with great success over the steeplechase country. Surpeen and Valpeen were dashing jumpers and Prettypeen, evidently thoroughly schooled, also fences fast and gallops freely. Ringlock and Count Lin were able to keep close yesterday until they cleared the fences on the hill about half a mile from home. But Prettypeen then produced a burst of speed which took her clear away. The win completed an eventful meeting for Prettypeen's rider, P. K. Cathro. On the first day Cathro finished second on Pin Money as well as Prettypeen and was first on Silver Eagle and second on Royal Count on the second day. Sabre took third in the McGregor Grant Steeplechase, 12 lengths behind Ringlock, bill with Count Lin still in the race he would have been only fourth. Count Lin was clearly third and not far behind Ringlock when he fell at the second last fence. Clipjoint, a local three-year-old filly, trained by F. T. and M. E. Ritchie, came back to winning form with a game, if narrow victory, in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the York Handicap. It was her first success since she won the Nainai Handicap at Trentham in October.

Clipjoint came to the front soon after starting the run home and just kept out the favourites.

Crojack and Tardini. She was the 7-6 win-and-place fancy. Clipjoint is raced by Messrs M. B. Anderson, of Auckland, and R. H. C. Wynyard, of Roto rua. She was a lucky last-minute ride for the Matamata apprentice, N. D. Landers. W. J. Mudford. originally engaged, was unable to make the weight of 7-8. The weather was mainly fine and the going heavy. The attendance was 14,469. Results: ORAKEI HURDLES, £1000; l|m. and 60yds.—4/3 LEE ANNE (10) 9- G. A. Walters 1; 1/1 SILVER EAGLE (1) 9-8 J. F. Grylls 2; 5/7 DANNY MOLLOY (12) 9-0 J. H. Hely 3.
