MEN’S BASKETBALL Canterbury Teams Enjoy Easy Wins
The greatly improved standard of the Canterbury men’s basketball representatives was much in evidence during the regional tournament at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Both the senior and colts’ sides handed out a series of defeats to their Mid and South Canterbury opponents. Canterbury’s senior team was much superior. In the afternoon it scored more than 80 points against Mid-Canter-bury and reached an even higher level in the evening,
with more than 100 points against South Canterbury— z rare achievement in first-class matches. Since its inception, Canterbury has always won the regional tournament, bul never before has it subjected the two southern teams tc such a one-sided battering Neither, in the memory o! officials, has it ever scored more than 100 points in s first-class match, a testa menial to the Canterbury coach, Mr P. Doogue. If any one player could be singled out as most prom inent it would be the jump shot exponent, R. Zachariassen. He scored an amazing 41 points in the two games with a series of accurate jump and set shots, as well as the occasional lay-up. His highest individual tally was 23 against South Canterbury. Results of the senior games were:— Canterbury 101, South Canterbury 44. Canterbury 82, Mid-Can-terbury 36. South Canterbury 50, Mid-Canterbury 35. The Canterbury colts were nc less impressive. They scored a fantastic win over a completely disorganised Mid-Canterbury side, 140-26, and in the first hall had 43 points on the board be fore the opposition scored. Al half-time, Canterbury led, 64-8 The game against South Canter bury was not quite so one-sided, Canterbury winning by 68 points to 22. In its first game, Canterbury A began very strongly, being 15 points up against Mid-Canter-bury before the former Christchurch High School Old Boys player, B. Tremewan, netted his side’s first goal. Mid-Canterbury rallied slightly but by half-time the home team was well in command of the situation, leading by 12 points. After the break, there was no holding the Canterbury players. They ran away from the opposition to win by 46 points. The Mid-Canterbury players passed badly, their shooting was wild, and they were constantly pulled up for infringements. South Canterbury was little better. Its play was extremely ragged and its defence very weak. There was far too much dribbling and little variety. The players tired rapidly, allowing Canterbury to score almost at will. At half-time, Canterbury led by 48 points to 16, later winning, 101 to 44. In spite of its heavy defeat by Canterbury, South Canterbury was the complete master of Mid-Canterbury. It led, 26-13, at half-time and won easing up by 50 paints to 35. J. Davidson and Cox were the best of the South Canterbury team, and G. Paterson was Mid-Canter-bury’s most successful player. Results were: SENIOR Canterbury A 82 (R. Spark 20, R. Zachariassen 18, M.
