FARMERS PROTEST
Protection Of Cycles
(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 13. The Federated Farmers have protested r gainst import control being used by the Government to protect New Zealand bicycle manufacturers. The organisation’s vicepresident, Mr A. C. Begg, said today the Government was involved in a clear breach of faith. Mr Begg said when the bicycle industry was established at Hastings, bicycle importers, wholesalers and retailers were assured it could face open competition from overseas. Then the industry sought extremely high duty protection from the Tariff and Development Board and received less than it asked for, said Mr Begg. Mr Begg said the present position meant anyone could set up an industry, claim it needed no protection and then get protection by import control as soon as it was in difficulties.
