Wage Claims
Sir, —Probably I was not the only “bottom-of-the-barrel scraper” who received a shock on reading in your issue of June 10 that the staff of Wilkins and Davies had struck for a rise in pay of 6d an hour above the pay level recently agreed upon between the local building firms and the Carpenters' Union. We cannot look kindly on their efforts towards raising the already excessive cost of living. Perhaps, during their self-imposed vacation, these building tradesmen may find time between their bentelbow exercises to ponder on the following facts. Workers in the building trade are probably receiving £l7 a week, plus incentive pay in most cases, also oodles of overtime pay and a further estimated £4 a week in benefits and subsidies, while about three-fifths of the world’s workers receive about £2O a year to provide for themselves and families.—Yours, etc., J. A. ROLLINSON. June 10, 1965.
