FOUR KILLED IN ACCIDENTS

Four persons died as a result of accidents at the week-end. Three died after road accidents and the fourth, a youth, died on the way to hospital after being injured playing Rugby in the Bay of Islands.

Two men died in accidents three miles west of Kurow. on the Kurow-Otematata state highway at 2.15 a.m. today, reports the Timaru reporter of “The Press.” They were David Gardiner, of Buller crescent, Otematata, a passenger in a car driven by James Andrew Nolan, aged 20, of the staff hostel, Otematata. Vince Bourgeois, aged about 30, of Clarence terrace. Otematata. He was a passenger in a car which had stopped to give assistance. According to Constable M. E. Eathorne, of the Kurow Police, Mr Nolan’s car, in which there were two passengers, the other being Charles Rogers, of the staff hostel, Otematata, had come

to rest in the road, when a second car ran into it. This car was driven by Cecil Alister Nightingale, aged 52, a painter, of 39 Weaver street, Oamaru. His wife, Sylvia Jean Nightingale, was a passenger. Mr Bourgeois suffered multiple injuries in the second accident. Mr Nolan’s car was extensively damaged and Mr Nightingale’s vehicle was damaged in the front. Knocked Down A 96-year-old man died in Middlemore Hospital on Saturday night after being knocked down by a car in Devonport, at 2.15 p.m., the Press Association reports from Auckland. He was David Carter, aged 96, retired, of the Esplanade Hotel, Devonport. Mr Carter was a former Auckland branch manager of the Union Steam Ship Company. Died In Ambulance A 17-year-old youth died in an ambulance on the way to the Bay of Islands Hospital on Saturday, after he suffered head injuries in a third grade Rugby game at Ohaeawai. Ohaeawai fifteen against a Bay of Islands college team. Seriously Hurt Three men were injured, one seriously, when two cars collided head on in Church street, Onehunga, at 6.40 p.m. on Saturday. James Walter Broadley, aged 82, retired, of Seymour street, Paeroa, suffered a broken leg. He was taken to Middlemore Hospital and tonight was reported to be seriously ill. Kenneth William Irwin, aged 20, clerk, and Andrew Hopewell Ross, aged about 20, both of One Tree Hill. Auckland, were treated and discharged.
