Advocacy Again In Duncan Handicap

(A’ew Zealand Press Association.)

WANGANUI. Advocacy scored his third win in four attempts in the Wanganui Jockey Club's Sir Thomas Duncan Handicap on the opening day of the club’s winter meeting on Saturday. [He also won the race in 1962 jand 1963, but failed last year. Saturday's race also carried a valuable challenge cup given by the Duncan family and up for competition for the first time. Advocacy’s owner, Mr D. J. Thomson, of Whangarei, will hold the trophy for one year. Advocacy was allowed to drift well back in the early stages and was still one of the tailenders with five furlongs to run. But he improved quickly round the outer from there and maintained his runs so well that at the finish he had three lengths on the fast-finishing Sir Torre, which was last at the half-mile. Summer Flight, in the first three all the way, fought on for a close third ahead of the consistent Jen Hal, which finished well from the ruck. Dowdcx, also running on, was next ahead of the weakening Solly Joel and the favourite. Patanga, which appeared to have every chance.

Monetary, one of the leaders all the way in the P. A. O’Neill Handicap, stayed on well for a narrow win over General Derby, with which he shared the pace. The unlucky favourite, Dhuran, which was forced over extra ground after an early check, came home well for third. That’s It made a strong late run for fourth ahead of David Jeff, which was slow away. Equality was a close sixth and best of the others were Pursuit, Count Carmel and Tara’s Pride. The weather was fine but the track soft after rain during the week. Results - :
