FOOD PRICE INDEX

Decrease Of

0.1 Per Cent. The index number for the all food group of the Consumers’ Price Index for May. 1965, is 1217 compared with 1218 for April—a decrease of .1 per cent, says the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). The fruit, vegetables and eggs sub-group made a downward contribution of nearly one point and the meat and fish and the other foods subgroup each made smaller downward contributions to the all foods group. The only movements of any significance by individual groups of items were an upward contribution to the all food group index of one point by beef meat items and a downward contribution of 1? points by sheep meat items. There were many other small movements in prices. “Although a fall in the price of sugar was announced during May this has so far not been reflected in the index because pricing is as at the 15th of the month for other food group items,’’ says MiBaker.
