War ‘Nearer To N.Z. Than Ever’—Chief Justice
/From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, June 6. ' “War clouds are looming on the horizon once again. They loom nearer to New Zealand than ever before," the Chief Justice (Sir Harold Barrowclough) told a reunion of members of the 26th Battalion at its 25th anniversary reunion in Timaru on Saturdaynight. “While you and I. who have known war, are the last to want another, the fact remains that men of our race .nay be called upon to make the sacrifice you made more than 20 years ago. "I think you owe a duty to the younger generation to see that the spirit of your battalion is kindled in them again.” Sir Harold Barrowclough said. “We have something over the edge of the horizon which is worse than Hitlerism and Nazism, and it is up to us to support those persons who are willing and prepared to
take steps to prevent it getting any closer.” said Briga- ; dier J. R. Page, the unit’s i first commanding officer. Sir Harold Barrowclough was for a time brigadier of the 6th Brigade, of which the ' battalion was a part. He began his military carjeer with the 4th Otago Regii ment, and commanded the territorial unit from 1923 to j 1928 and the South Island i territorial infantry brigade I from 1929 to 1931. | The unit was essentially civilian. Brigadier Page said. It had established a great (tradition, and achieved some special qualities. On Sunday, the veterans marched to the war memorial where wreaths were laid.
