RACING Fine Chase Tipped For Otago Steeples
Fine Chase. Kumai. Combination, and McGregor should be a powerful “home” quartet in main races on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting today.
Kumai (Birthday Handicap) and McGregor (Greenfield Hurdles) will be runners for the powerful Anderton stable.
H. A. Anderton will have several other runners on today’s programme. One is No Offence, top-weight in the Otago Steeples, but not one of the stronger fancies after a moderate patch of form lately.
The six-year-old Fine Chase is a sure jumper with a good turn of speed, and he could improve the strong record of jumpers from the McKay stable in today's Otago Steeples. He has 9-7, and is 221 b below No Offence. If his jumping does not land him in trouble Fine Chase should beat the 1963 Grand National winner at the weights. Tidal Rip and Grant, two successful Southland-owned jumpers, could be stronger Otago Steeples rivals. Tidal Rip, from the powerful Winsloe stable, won a double at Riverton at Easter. Kumai and Combination are a fancied combination for today's T.A.B. double, which is on the Birthday and Winter Handicaps. McGregor, the James Hazlett Gold Cup winner in 1962. should be too fast for the others in the Greenfield Hurdles.
Jumping ability will, of course, also be an important factor, and McGregor should not fail on that score, either He won over hurdles at Gore in the spring, and comes from a stable noted for the good standard of jumping shown by its hurdling recruits.
Canterbury stables have no runners in the main races, the Birthday Handicap and the Otago Steeples. A good percentage of the complete Canterbury team can be found in the Winter Handicap. Here Cranbrook. Tutton, Canadiana. and Etoile Este will run against the southern sprinters with fair chances of bringinig winning honours north. Cranbrook, top-weight with 9-6, won this race with 131 b less last year. Combination could win this race today with the weight Cranbrook carried last year, but Canadiana and Tutton might run him close. Wingatui had fine weather after a frost yesterday. The track will be soft. Fields are.— ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11.15 a.m.— FIRST TRIAL STAKES,
