I A . youth who had already spent four of his 20' years I in- detention was today • sentenced by Mr Justice Tomp- ■ kins to five years’ prison for J the rape of a Lower Hutt ■ woman on March 18. The youth, Lawrence Te-iwi-toa-kanohi, was also sentenced to concurrent terms on i three counts of burglary and four of thefts from dwellings. He was found guilty by a jury of raping, the. woman when she arrived home and disturbed him while he was robbing her house. Sentencing Kanohi. his Honour said it had been a frightful and’shocking attack. In spite of the Courts reluctance .to impose heavy gaol sentences on youths, it was clear, his Honour said, that the nature of the crime and Kanohi's character and personal history made a severe sentence inevitable.
