High Fashion For The Ski Field
Ski clothes today are In the real field of high fashion and those modelled in a fashion show presented by the Canterbury Ski Association this week were no exception.
Clothes attuned to the exhilaration of the mountain air and the demands of a vigorous sport were displayed in new exciting shades and styles. Snappy stretch slacks in a variety of fabrics—cotton, fleecy-backed rayon helancaproofed poplin, and the ever popular wool—were designed for comfort while giving a slimming line to the less fit enthusiast. The basic black for trousers was rivalled by unusual shades of mustard, olive green, maroon, charcoal grey. The newest design in slacks, incorporating a brace top and cross-over straps seemed to be a winter transition of the topless bathing suit. Skivvies did not appear to have diminished in popularity and were worn under the bulky ski jerseys which featured intricate fairisle and Norwegian designs. Combinations of red, white and blue, bottle green and red,
shades of gold, and a striking burgandy and white transformed the essentially warm wool sweater into a very dashing garment.
The waterproof parka was given a touch of luxury with quilted nylon or poplin, and often a fur or silk lining. With the exception of an attractive deep blue and white pattern, clear shades of red and blue were the popular choice.
Squaw coats in big, bold checks of scarlet and emerald green and black, and a fringed, winter-white design, provided a glamorous but warm “coverup.” The parades were compered by Mrs Julie Cunningham and Mr Cosmo Davies.
Proceeds from the evening will help raise the fund for the Junior Ski Scholarship which will enable selected young skiers to receive specialised training.
