STAMP-COLLECTORS have become accustomed in recent years to keeping up to date with the rapid development of international affairs leading in some cases to new names for new nations. Nyasaland, for example, has become Malawi, and what was formerly Northern Rhodesia is now known as Zambia. There is one region, however, which manages to be known by three different names at the same time —and yet the permanent population consists mainly of penguins. The region in question lies in the frozen southern continent of Antarctica, and it has three names because it has been claimed by three different nations. This international bickering has been duly reflected in stamps. Britain was first to lay official claim to the area as far back as 1908, and called it
