SWAM RIVER, WALKED

Fisherman Safe (N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH, June 3. A young fisherman, who was stranded on a beach near the remote Cascade river in far South Westland on Monday morning, reached the settlement at Jackson Bay on foot today after slogging his way through some of the worst bush in the country. The fisherman, Peter Eggeling, aged 21, was stranded on the beach after his dinghy was swamped. He had left the crayfish boat, Compass Rose, to retrieve a crayfish pot. Mr Eggeling reached the shore and made for a hut.

It was planned to pick him up from the airstrip nearby with a light aircraft, but Mr Eggeling decided to swim the Cascade river and walk to Jackson Bay.
