RUBBISH DUMPING
Call For Penalties “The Press" Special Service MASTERTON, June 2. The Counties and Municipal Associations will be supported by the New Zealand Catchment Authorities Association in seeking more effective legislation against unauthorised beach dumping. At the association’s annual meeting today, Mr A. T. Bell (North Canterbury) said riverbeds were among the favourite spots for rubbish dumping. He said the North Canterbury Catchment Board had a big problem with dumping in riverbeds adjacent to Christchurch and other built-up areas. In the board’s area were legal rubbish dumps but most people still used riverbeds, an example being along the banks of the Waimakariri river where at least 20 acres was covered with old cars, etc.
He urged that substantial penalties should be enforced so that people would learn to use controlled dumping. All other speakers were in favour of Mr Bell’s motion, the general feeling being that people would have to be educated.
