HANDS ONLY

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 2. Toheroa hunters next season may have to dig for the shellfish with their hands only, and then only in daylight. The Marine Department has recommended these restrictions to try to conserve badly depleted North Island beds. It is also recommended the number of toheroas

taken from a beach in any one vehicle be limited to 100. This, however, will affect only parties of six or more as the present limit of 20 toheroas a person will remain. The recommendations will be discussed between departmental heads and the Minister of Marine (Mr Scott), before a decision.
