Bowlers Reap Early Reward

[From R T. BRITTENDEN. N Z PA Special Correspondent I BRADFORD, June 2. New Zealand had some dramatic successes when its match against Yorkshire began this morning and should have had more. Although a lunch score of 115 for four wickets may make satisfactory reading, New Zealand did not fully exploit the pitch on which the ball lifted and an atmosphere in which it kept swinging.

After two early successes Motz and Taylor bowled inaccurately and the lastminute omission of Cameron seemed unfortunate. However, there were many edged runs as well as many fine forcing shots from the batsmen and it was a violent-ly-antagonistic morning all round, Yorkshire hitting 17 fours in the first 93 runs off the bat.

Both teams made late changes. New Zealand included B. W. Yuile for F. J. Cameron, the decision being made after an examination of the pitch.

Yorkshire included its pace bowler. A. G. Nicholson, in spite of an injury two days ago necessitating four stitches in his chin. The teams are: Yorkshire: D. B. Close, R. Illingworth. J G. Binks, F. S. Trueman, G. Boycott, Nicholson. P. A. Sharpe, D. V. Padgett, R. A. Hutton. D. Wilson, J. Hampshire. New Zealand: J. R. Reid. B. E. Congdon. G. T. Dowling, B. W. Sinclair, R. W. Morgan. T. W. Jarvis. V. Pollard. B. W. Yuile. B. R. Taylor. J. T. Ward. R..C. Motz.

Spectacular Start The weather was fine and overcast at the start, the forecast promising a day probablv free of rain.

Expectations that the pitch would help the seamers were born out spectacularly in the opening overs. In his first four overs of good length outswingers, Motz conceded runs only once, Hampshire slashing him over the heads of the slips for four. At the other end Taylor, if erratic, bowled some beautiful lifting out-swingers and in his third over he found the edge of Boycott s bat for Reid, at third slip, to take a fine catch at ankle height Padgett came in. played and missed at Taylor twice, and from his third ball was neatly taken bv Jarvis at first slip. So Yorkshire had lost two for nine.

Sharpe Dropped But Sharpe struck back with two on-side fours from a bad over by Taylor and was then missed by Congdon at second slip off the same bowler. It was an indication of violent activity that when Yorkshire reached 25 there had been six boundaries. Motz was dreadfully unlucky when Hampshire achieved a four to fine leg from the bat handle over the top of the stumps, but in the next over Motz lost direction and Hampshire took 13, with three firm on-side hits. But Motz settled that score bv bowling a highly disorganised Hampshire with an outswinger a few minutes later.

at this stage that New Zealand’s fierce attack was waning as the opening bowlers went into a second hour of effort. Taylor nearly had another wicket, but Pollard, at gully, failed to hold a very difficult chance low and far to his right hand when Sharpe was 17. Close, driving square and through the covers, took a [toll of the tiring Taylor and ; when Congdon came on Sharpe struck three successive long hops through covers, finding the boundary each time.

Only Reid bowled with the accuracy the situation demanded. Yet it was Congdon who dismissed Sharpe. The batsman drove at an outswinger and Reid, at gully, took a magnificent catch over his right shoulder. Twenty minutes before lunch Motz started his second spell and Illingworth "opened his score by flicking him fine fust wide of the diving Ward. Close luckily edged Reid for four and the ball was still lifting appreciably.

Close was also fortunate when edging Taylor to find the third slip had been taken away: he was replaced, straight away but it seemed
