Parliament’s Diary

Parliament got down to business yesterday afternoon with the introduction of 11 bills, all of which received a first reading. They were: The Territorial Sea and Fishing Zone bill, the Cook Islands Amendment bill, the Cook Islands Constitution Amendment bill, the Property Law Amendment bill, the Police Offences Amendment bill, the Electoral Amendment bill, the Shops and Offices Amendment bill, the Customs Amendment bill, the Apiaries Amendment bill, the Medical Research Council Amendment bill, and Tauranga County Empowering (Community Centres) bill.

The Property Law, Police Offences and Medical Research measures were read a second time and referred to committees.

Papers tabled included the annual report of the State Insurance Office. The afternoon was given over to debate on a notice of motion, which was unfinished.

During the evening, the Address-in-Reply debate was continued. the speakers being: Opposition: The Leader (Mr Nordmeyer), Messrs J. Mathison (Avon), N. V. Douglas (Auckland Central), W. W. Freer (Mount Albert). Government: The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), ■the Under-Secretary for Industries and Commerce (Mr L. R. Adams-Schnei-der), the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae), Mrs E. I. Tombleson (Gisborne).
