Peace Committee Sent By O.A.S.

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 2. The Organisation of American States today decided to send a committee to Dominican Republic to he’p re-establish normal conditions. The three-man committee—from the United States, Brazil and El Salvador —will also give guidance to the inter-American force.

The proposal for a committee was advanced by Brazil and the final resolution was worked out last night after three days of informal debates.

The O.A.S. Ministerial Council adopted the plan with 15 votes, one more than the necessary absolute majority of 14. Uruguay, Mexico and Chile voted against the proposal, and Argentina and Venezuela abstained. The committee’s tasks, according to the resolution, are to offer its good offices to all Dominican parties with the aim of achieving a climate of peace and reconciliation, which would allow the functioning of democratic institutions in the Dominican Republic, and make it possible to revive the country’s social and economic life. The committee would continue the task of the fivemember commission which went to Santo Domingo twice last month and the one now being carried out by Mr Jose Mora, the O.A.S. representative in the Dominican Republic, the resolution said. The second task of the committee will be to give the inter-American force in the Dominican Republic the

“directives necessary” for the realisation of the task assigned to it when its creation was decided on May 6. The resolution of May 6 said the force would have as its sole purpose that of cooperating with the O.A.S. in the restoration of normal conditions in the Dominican Republic, in maintaining the security of the Dominican population and in helping to

establish an atmosphere of peace and conciliation. The committee is expected to leave for the Dominican Republic today.
