PARKING CHARGE
Big Saving For Motorists (N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU, May 28. Motorists in Oamaru were saved at least £2500 last year as a result of the introduction by the Oamaru Borough Council of the 2s parking meter surcharge scheme. Last financial year. 1235 motorists paid 2s, netting the council £123 10s in fees. Had the scheme not been operating, the motorists would have faced court proceeding, which, at a minimum of 10s for fines and £1 10s for costs, would have netted. £2470. But with a graduating scale of fine imposed—the longer a motorist overpariks the heavier the fine—revenue would have been substantially more. Last financial year, 422,880 parking half-hours were paid, returning £536L
