Amalgamation “Danger”

Although a certain amount of take-over and amalgamation in the transport industry could be to the advantage of both the operator and the user, the executive thought the danger inherent in monopolies was ever present, the retiring secretary of North Canterbury Federated Farmers (Mr A. E. G. Lyttle), said in his report to the annual provincial conference yesterday. Mr Lyttle was reviewing last year’s work of the provincial executive. During the year, he said, the executive’s attention had been drawn to the gradual absorption of smaller transport operators by larger concerns.

A safeguarding factor, however, was that the transport industry was a licensed one and transport rates had to be approved by the Commissioner of Transport, Mr Lyttle said.
