Fishing Finance Soon
6V.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 28. The Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) said today that some finance would be available soon to the fishindustry through the Industrial Finance Corporation.
The Minister was replying to a reported statement by the secretary of the West
Coast Fishermen’s Association (Mr S. Gladstone), who said fishermen were concerned at the lack of activity of the Minister and the Fisheries Advisory Board in making finance more readily available to buy boats, high import duties on essential fishing gear and the continuing downward trend of retail prices. Mr Scott said duty on fishing equipment was “still under active consideration.” It was expected that a decision would be announced “in the very near future.” Commenting on Mr Glad-
stone’s statement about the dumping of some varieties of fish, the Minister said the disposal of all varieties caught by the fisherman was “a major problem.” This problem, Mr Scott added, was “being actively investigated at the present time” by the Fishing Industry Board. Mr Scott said he believed that wholesalers had on several occasions initiated arrangements for the purchase of the varieties where fishermen had reported the problem of disposal.
