U.K. Asked To Save Condemned

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)

LUSAKA, May 27.

The United Nations Special Committee on Colonialism today called on Britain to save the lives of people condemned to death under Rhodesia’s Law and Order Maintenance Act.

A resolution which it approved also called for the release of all political prisoners in Rhodesia. All members of the committee voted in favour. Australia and the United States abstained and Britain did not take part in the voting. Throughout the day Britain came under heavy fire on Rhodesia from Afro-Asian and Communist members of the committee.

At one point, when Britain’s delegate, Mr Francis Brown, intervened to question the relevance of part of a statement from a Rhodesian African nationalist giving evi-

dence to the committee, there were angry shouts from outside the hall of “traitor” and “get out.” The shouts came from Rhodesian supporters of Mr George Nyandoro, general secretary of the banned Rhodesian party, the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union.
