(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, May 26.
Convicted for the seventh time of driving while disqualified, Wi Matini, aged 36, a workman, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and was forbidden to drive again before August 13,1983, by Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., today.
Matini pleaded guilty to this charge and also to having driven in a dangerous manner for which he was given a cumulative sentence of three months’ gaol. Senior Sergeant R. M. Schwass said Matini, as he turned into a street cut so close to the corner that several pedestrians were forced to jump back hurriedly. One woman was not quick enough and was struck by the car. Matini told police that he thought it was “funny to
make people jump back off the corner.” When he was arrested in Balclutha he was found to be a disqualified driver who had just served three months’ imprisonment imposed by a Christchurch magistrate in December. Matini had been charged six times with driving while disqualified since 1963. The Magistrate said the statutory penalty of three months’ imprisonment should be raised for such cases.
