HISTORIC HOUSES
Latest Guide Published
Members of the British Antique Dealers’ Association throughout the country have been listed for the first time in the 1965 edition of “Historic Houses, Castles and Gardens.” a 98-page guide to the country houses and castles in Great Britain and Ireland. The guide, which contains 255 illustrations, details most of the habitable properties open to the public. They include all the privately-owned and “lived-in” mansions regularly opened to the public together with the majority of houses and gardens under the control erf the National Trust and the National Trust for Scotland, castles and estates administered by the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works,, and houses under the care of local civic authorities. Stored Riches
In a contributed article Mr Peter Wilson, chairman of Sotherby’s, says there is no pleasure like visiting these wonderful houses, and there is no country in the world which can display a fraction of the riches stored in them. “Week-end expeditions to see country houses, a modern grand tour in miniature, combined with a visit to the local antique shop, are among the pleasures of life which this country alone can offer and the wealth, much still to be discovered, displayed in these pages is an invitation not to be turned down,” he says.
