Australia Still Biggest Market For N.Z. Goods

CN.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 25. More than 85 per cent of New Zealand manufacturers’ exports are being sent to nine countries around the Pacific basin, according tn an analysis issued by the Manufacturers’ Federation.

Of these markets, Australia is by far the biggest, and in the six months, June to December, 1964, exports by manufacturers to Australia amounted to £6.250.000, which was just over 70 per cent of the total exports by manufacturers.

The other countries surveyed are in three groups— South-east Asia (Malaysia, Thailand. Hong Kong and the Philippines), North America (Canada and the United States) and the Pacific Islands (Fiji and Western Samoa). Smaller Pacific Islands markets and Japan have not yet been surveyed.

In all these market areas there is a consistent pattern of growth of exports on a wide base. One or two exceptions are noted, but the general trend has been for a rise in

sales in the period immediately after a trade mission, and a continuing increase as follow-up work, either individually or in selling groups, bas been carried out. The flow of exports to the nine countries surveyed in the six months. June to December, 1964. was 56 per cent greater than two years before.
