CHRISTCHURCH BUS FARES

Union Attitude To Increase

Bus fares should be kept as low as possible to encourage people to use public transport said the secretary of the Canterbury Tramway Workers’ Union (Mr L. C. J. Southon) yesterday. This, he said., was in line with the union’s policy. He was commenting on a statement by the chairman of the Christchurch Transport Board finance committee (Mr E. J. Bradshaw), who said on Monday that if there was no improvement in passenger revenue a review of the board’s bus fares would be inevitable after another 12 months. Mr Southon said that if people could .be encouraged to travel by public transport, reductions in the board’s rates could come later. Reducing the rates and forecasting an increase in fares was the wrong way to go about the problem.
