Smith, Bueno Final Expected

(N Z P-A-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, May 25. Miss M. Smith (Australia) and Miss M. E. Bueno (Brazil), the world’s two leading women’s tennis players, yesterday moved a step nearer their expected clash in the singles final at the French championships.

Miss Smith, the 22-year-old Australian champion, defeated Mrs V. Vopickova, the

Czechoslovakian No. 2, 6-0, 65, in the fourth round. She has reached the quarter-finals for the loss of only four games in three matchesMiss Bueno, aged 24, was less impressive in beating Miss G. Sherriff, the sixth ranked Australian. 6-1, 3-6, 64. Miss Bueno did not show all her usual poise. She won the first set comfortably, but was knocked out of her stride in the second by Miss SherrifTs forehand driving. The Australian girl had time to move round the ball on the slow hard court, and then she thumped it with

all her power. In the third set, however, Miss Bueno played some delightful tennis, manoeuvring her opponent out of position and then putting away delicate winners. Miss Bueno’s next opponent is the tali' South African No. I, Miss A. van Zyl. In the other quarter-final, Miss U. Turner (Australia) meets Mrs A. Jones (Britain), and Miss N. Richey (United States) plays Miss F. Durr (France). In the one quarter-final of the men’s singles played yesterday, the fourth seed, F. Stolle, beat the twelfth seed, J. Newcombe, 6-1, 7-5, 11-9,

in the match between two of the four Australians to have reached this stage. Stolle, the Wimbledon run-ner-up, was quicker to the net and steadier when he got there. Newcombe had trouble getting up to the net because of the constant threat of Stolle’s passing shots-

The other two Australians will play today when the top seed, R. Emerson, meets P. Barthes (France) and A. Roche meets I. Buding (Germany).

C. Drysdale (South Africa) went through to the semifinals when his Russian opponent, T. Lejus, withdrew.
